Ancient Tongue is me entering into a space where I am creating my tribe. Understanding cultural practice and significance of mask making. I contribute to this mask the things that make me unique.
How do I feel things? The sex toy in the mouth, nails as teeth, and a belt over the head. All of the aesthetics are parallel to feeling. How do I feel when I can’t breathe or nails are in my mouth.
The belt across the head is special. It reminds me of when my mother would whoop me as a child. The sculpture taking it as a static shock played out by the hair.
The jewelry in the ears is from my mother collection.
She is the best mom and a inspiration for my work. I included the earrings as a tribute.
The jewelry and pearls represent royalty. Something I believe we all carry. Intentionally adding it in the sculpture to signify the claim.
Ancient Tongue is my first sculpture and first steps towards creating the identity to my tribe.
